Built over many centuries, always on the cross roads of history, favored and destroyed, Riga has created an explicit beauty and charm of its own. Since 1201, the year of its first mentioning in historical chronicles, Riga has been a strategically important location. Over the centuries it has grown into the geopolitical, economic and cultural center of Latvia, and may indeed be considered the heart of the whole Baltic region. The superpowers of the past have written the city's history through wars, sieges and blockades. Germans, Swedes, Russians and Poles, have each left their traces in the ruins, legends and picturesque architectural styles. Gothic, Mannerism, Baroque and Classicism speak to us around each corner we walk...
Old Town (Vecriga) is the oldest part of the city, lying securely on the right bank of the River Daugava. The narrow streets, warehouses from the Middle Ages, dwelling houses and numerous churches in the old Town are worth attention. One of the oldest and most awe-inspiring structures in Riga is the Dome Cathedral, well known for its colorful mixture of architectural styles. St.Peter's church is a stunning monument of Baroque architecture, while the former Castle of the Livonian Order reflects the vivid history of the city itself and is the residence of Latvian President of State. Old Town is a collection of many interesting historical buildings within a territory of some 40 ha.
In the late 19th century and on the dawn of the 20th century a new architectural style came to dominate in Riga - Art Noveau was a testimony of the growing prosperity of Rigans at the time. Art Noveau buildings in Riga are indeed a spectacular interplay of form and light, and leave a strong and lasting impression.
