During the Duke Jacob' s rule in Kurzeme (16th - 18th century) an iron manufactory functioned here, as well as a smithy of ancors and iron bars, a cannon and bell foundry, a gun turnery, coopers' workshop, a pitch tappery etc. In the first half of the 19th century shipbuilding began in Engure. The White Dune, the Engure Lake and the birdwatching tower in the Engure Nature park are worth seeing indeed. ![]() ![]()

Duration of the tour - 7 hours. Length of the route - 235 km The Via Baltica highway connects Riga with Tallinn (the capital of Estonia). It runs along the Vidzeme coastline, and crosses many towns and wanders through the Litoral pine forest zone. Saulkrasti town has grown between three rivers - Incupe, Peterupe and Kisupe. Some centuries ago this place was famous for summer sunbathing and swimming pleasures among the noble families of the Northern Vidzeme region. The old and decorative cottages remind of that time. Lauci Stone - it is the largest sea-stone in Vidzeme. The Red Cliffs - A unique natural formation - the sea has cut these cliffs out of the ground and made lots of bigger and smaller caves. The color of the sandstone cliff is red due to the interesting mixture of the minerals and metals. At times the small springs running through the narrow caves form cascades and miniature waterfalls. Limbazi - a town between two lakes - Lielezers and Dunezers. Since older days it has been called the "Herring Capital" - every autumn a busy herring trade takes place in Limbazi. The streets of the old part of the town have a perfect radial planning. Birini manor house - a group of Neo-Gothic style buildings. The interior of the Birini manor house was finished in 1880. The park was laid out in Neo-Renaissance style and has approximately 45 species of trees. There is also a pond in the park as well as the "Love Oak", a legendary tree where hundreds of small bells are being hung by new-weds. Since the time when the place was owned by a clerk of the Polish governor in Vidzeme in 16th century till the dramatic events of the 20th century - the history and chronicles of the Birini manor house would not be complete without the numerous legends that tell about the faith and relationships of the people who had been living here.

The premieval valley of the Abava river has been immortalized in the wonderful works of Latvian artists, composers and poets. One of the most popular attractions of the Latvian culture tourism - the Pedvale Open-air Art Museum is situated here, near the Sabile town. ![]() Kandava - one of the most picturesque small romantic towns in Latvia. Since the 19th century it has been called the "Switzerland of Kurzeme". Sabile - a town in the very middle of the former Kurzeme Dutchy. The plan of the town is terrace-shaped and is considered the most beautiful place of the Abava river valley. The old vine-yard hill has been included in the Guinness Book of Records, because it is the most northern part in the world where wine is grown. Kuldiga - the capital of the former Kurzeme Dutchy, the flourishing centre of economy and culture of the 17th and 18th centuries. The most popular duke of that time - Jacob Kettler was born in Kuldiga. Swedish King Charles XII has stayed here for some time and his decorative traveling case which he left in Kuldiga still reminds of that time. ![]()

Duration of the tour - 7 hours Length of the route - 196 km The fertile lands of Zemgale region have been populated since ancient times and the remains of the first human settlements still can be found on the banks of the Lielupe river. The stone castles and fortreses, as well as nice and fine Baroque style palaces draw the colorful picture of the history of Zemgale plains. ![]() Rundale Palace - built in the 18th century as a summer residence for the Duke of Kurzeme Ernst Johann Biron and designed by the prominent architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli. The interiors of the palace are the finest examples of the Baroque style and Rococo decorative art in Latvia. The repositories of museum contain more than 36 000 items. Bauska - the town and the castle. Bauska was first mentioned in 1443, when the Livonian Order started to build a castle where the two rivers - Musa and Memele meet. Bauska castle is an architectural monument dating from the 15th to 17th centuries. Visitors can enter the oldest part of the stone castle, climb the stairs of the central tower and enjoy a magnificent view of the surrounding countryside. Some 13th century buildings and wooden and iron decorations can still be seen on the streets of the Bauska town.

Duration of the tour - 8 hours Length of the route - 264 km The Gauja National Park is famous for its sandstone river valley, romantic caves and relatively untouched forests. In 1973, a nature reserve was founded here to preserve the unique natural formations of the area- the steep banks of the river Gauja, springs, ravines, cliffs and caves. There are two beautiful towns on the Gauja river - Sigulda and Cesis. ![]() Turaida - The central attraction of the Turaida Museum Reserve is the restored set of buildings - the Riga Archbishop's medieval castle complex. Visitors can climb the central tower and enjoy the magnificent panorama of the Gauja Primeval Valley. The name "Turaida" means the "God's Garden" in the ancient Liv language. Gutmanala Cave - A beautiful and legendary sandstone cave - it is 14 m in depth and 9 m high. The legend tells a romantic and tragic love story of the 16th century. The Araisi Lake Fortress - The museum-park covers an area of 1010 hectares around the Araisi Lake. It is the first archaeological open-air reconstruction in Latvia, which reveals the life style of ancient Letigallians during the Viking Age (9th - 10th centuries). This, together with the old Livonian Order's Castle, a church with a cemetery, a manor, a pub and a mill make a collection of great interest. Cesis - One of the oldest towns of Latvia. Once it was famous in Europe as the capital of the Livonian Order. The old medieval castle as well as the New Castle tell the colorful history of the town. Today the town attracts visitors with the wide range of cultural activities - the festivities of the old town and the medieval knight's shows, the traditional Cesis Beer Festival as well as open-air opera performances and concerts.
